Profile
I am a qualified teacher of the deaf and specialist teacher for children who are deafblind/multi-sensory impaired. I have worked in the field of deaf education for over 35 years, in Resource bases, Special Schools, as a Peripatetic Teacher and as a Head Teacher of a special school for deaf children. I have also worked for a short time with the National Deaf Children’s Society as an Appeals and Disputes officer and am a Teaching Practice Supervisor on the Mary Hare/ Hertfordshire University Teacher of the Deaf Course. I have a special interest in supporting deaf children with complex needs.

My present work involves me offering consultancy support in schools, ( this may be organised as blocks of support or as a one off session), and conducting assessments to support EHCP's and school placements. I have experience of supporting families for tribunals. My assessments are holistic, reflecting the needs of the whole child and are truly functional as they are administered in the child’s own setting.

I am committed to supporting quality education for deaf and multi-sensory impaired pupils and strive to work in partnership with pupils, families and educational teams. I always seek to support young people to see the best in themselves and achieve the best possible outcomes relevant to their ability.

Advisory Services Detail
In addition to providing specialist advice through assessment reports which can be used to inform an EHCP, advise local provision and provide evidence for SEND Tribunals, I offer a service, working directly with children in their educational setting, supporting the school team to meet the needs of the child or young person in their care. These can be one-off sessions or blocks of sessions depending on the needs of the pupil and the school staff.
I enjoy multi agency working and am able to support the wider team, working alongside teachers of the deaf and teachers for visually impaired children, speech and language therapists and audiologists.
Assessment Detail
Each assessment is tailored to the child’s needs but will usually include:
• A gathering of information about functional use of hearing/vision and use of technology.
• An observation of the child’s strengths and areas of need.
• An understanding of the child’s communication skills, including verbal and non-verbal skills, vocabulary, and spoken language.
• Mobility skills, including fine and gross motor skills, independence and sensory processing skills.
• Social skills, and emotional literacy skills.
Training Detail
I am an experienced trainer. I have supported SENSE and Online Inset in developing some of their training materials. I have also lectured on the Herts, formerly Oxford Brookes, Teacher of the Deaf course.

I can provide bespoke training packages or mentor staff, new to sensory impairment and support intervenor training.
